The 2003-04 Oumu exchange students participated in a video contest during the second semester of the school year—and the results were awesome! Students were instructed to create a video “that best conveys a unique and interesting aspect of life in the student's own country.” The topics ranged from skimboarding to Segways and from sewage treatment plants to special schools in China. In all, we had 30 entries from all six schools in the exchange program.
Based on the contest rules, the judges selected the film Youth Volunteers' Activities as First Prize Winner. This movie tells the story of how a group of students spent Chinese Youth Day working at another school washing, scrubbing, and mopping. Congratulations to the team of Zhao Jingjing, Zhen Jie, Deng Wei, and Wang Ran from Lu He High School!
Of the many excellent second place films, we'd like to highlight Seal Carving from Beijing No. 171 Middle School, The School For Children Of Labourers Working On Public Projects from Rendafuzhong, and The May Fête Parade from Jane Lathrop Stanford Middle School. “Seal Carving” illustrates the traditional art of creating name stamps by hand, and compositionally is excellent. “The School For Children Of Labourers Working On Public Projects” conveys an interesting aspect of Chinese society using fine post-production techniques. And finally, “The May Fête Parade” depicts a local tradition from Palo Alto celebrating May Day, and incorporates an original soundtrack.
All of the winning videos can be accessed from the table below. Congratulations to all the participants for their fine work and for sharing an aspect of your life with students from around the world!
